Making the change | Helping BWG move to biomethane
BWG is a leading retail and wholesale distribution company operating in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. BWG owns and operates a number of leading retail brands with over 1,400 Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL stores serving local communities, in partnership with independent retailers.
The BWG & VisionGreen partnership saw the implementation of the first-ever biomethane-run HGVs in Ireland.
As BWG relies heavily on diesel-powered trucks, the company was seeking to reduce its transport fleet’s emissions.
The VisionGreen Solution
BWG adopted our sustainability recommendations and agreed to co-implement two gas-powered heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) that ran on biomethane – a first for Ireland. The circular economy concept involved bringing food waste from BWG’s depot to generate biomethane in an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in Kildare. The biomethane produced was then used to fuel the two HGVs. Made from food, animal and agriculture waste (organic or biodegradable waste), biomethane is a carbon neutral alternative to diesel – leading to an immediate transport emission reduction for BWG’s fleet.
